Vocational Training in Spain: Record Enrollment, Stricter Oversight, and the New Employment Landscape

Enrollment in Spain's vocational training programs has surged, prompting the government to tighten quality controls, expand specialized courses, and address the growing demand for skilled workers.

A System at a Crossroads

Spain's vocational training (FP) system is entering a pivotal phase. According to Esther Monterrubio, the secretary general of Vocational Training, the key challenge for 2026 is to cement the recent expansion by raising quality standards, enforcing rigorous evaluation, and deepening ties with industry. To that end, the government has launched a broad set of measures aimed at safeguarding both quality and equity across the system.

A prominent initiative is the establishment of ten new Centers of Vocational Excellence during 2026. These centers will receive larger investments and more careful planning to deliver cutting-edge training that aligns with innovation and actual labor market needs. In addition, the government is drafting a Royal Decree that would impose clear limits on the opening of new private centers, requiring them to meet sufficient educational quality standards. This move comes as private provision has expanded rapidly, doubling in a few years relative to the public network.

Another significant development concerns distance learning in vocational training. The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports will set a minimum number of in-person hours for online programs, with particularly strict requirements for health-related qualifications or those that lead to a professional license. The regulation is intended to prevent the digital shift from creating inequalities and to provide a clear framework of academic and professional guarantees for online training.

Public Funding and New Specialization Courses

The government's financial commitment is reflected in recent budget allocations. The Council of Ministers has approved the distribution of 31.3 million euros among the autonomous communities to boost vocational training quality and support the creation of new courses. Of this total, 13.43 million euros will go to innovation and applied digitalization projects, 9.57 million to teacher training and placements, and 7.24 million to organizing the Skills Championships.

As part of this effort, two new specialization courses have been created: an intermediate-level course in Comprehensive Assembly and Maintenance of Bicycles and Personal Mobility Vehicles, and an advanced-level course in Development of Electronic Equipment and Systems. With these additions, a total of 37 specialization courses have been established since 2019. Three more courses approved in February 2026 are also being added, linked to computing and hospitality—for example, Deployment of Software Products in Containers and Mycological Tourism.

Employability and Career Outcomes: Vocational Training Overtakes University Degrees

One of the most telling figures for 2026 is what has been called the educational "sorpasso": 46.96% of job offers in Spain now require vocational training qualifications, more than double the 21.42% recorded for university candidates. This means that nearly 47% of job postings target vocational training profiles, far exceeding the demand for university degrees.

Advanced-level vocational programs are the most sought after, accounting for more than 42% of job offers. Among the qualifications with the highest employability and best salaries are:

  • Multiplatform Application Development (DAM) and Web Application Development (DAW): with salaries that can range from 1,600 to 3,300 euros gross per month.
  • Administration and Finance: highly demanded for its versatility, with salaries between 1,600 and 2,500 euros.
  • Nursing Auxiliary Care Technician (TCAE): with high hiring levels due to population aging, offering pay from 1,500 to 2,100 euros.

Broadly speaking, programs in computing, administration, and healthcare are consolidating as the options with the strongest employability and best salary prospects in 2026. The industry accumulates more than 100,000 unfilled vacancies, and it is estimated that Spain needs to incorporate 1.5 million specialists with advanced digital skills.

Dual Vocational Training: A Model in Expansion

Dual vocational training is establishing itself as one of the most successful models within the vocational training system. This approach, which connects students with companies from the first year of study, marks its second year in 2026. Its implementation, though uneven across regions and sectors, continues to grow.

Among the novelties for 2026 is the creation of the role of dual coordinator in centers with six or more vocational training groups. In addition, 100 additional hours have been allocated in dual vocational training for those responsible for external professional activities, on top of the 300 already planned. Employability for students in the dual modality is particularly high, reaching 80% after completing the program, with a 30% increase in enrollment in recent years.

Tips for Choosing Your Training Path in 2026

  • Research job prospects: Before choosing a program, review employability data and market trends. The technology, healthcare, and administrative sectors offer the greatest opportunities.
  • Consider the dual modality: If you seek rapid entry into the workforce and hands-on experience from day one, dual vocational training is your best option.
  • Take advantage of new specialization courses: The range of qualifications is constantly expanding. Learn about the new courses created in 2026, such as those linked to sustainable mobility or artificial intelligence.
  • Check the regulations on online vocational training: If you opt for distance learning, make sure the center complies with the new minimum in-person requirements.

In short, vocational training in Spain is experiencing its best historical moment in 2026. With record enrollment in vocational training, unprecedented public investment, growing demand from companies, and the consolidation of innovative models such as dual training, this educational system has become the engine of employment and economic development in the country. If you are looking for training that opens the doors of the labor market with guarantees, vocational training is, today more than ever, the most sensible choice. Do not miss this opportunity: inform yourself, choose your path, and take the step toward a professional future full of possibilities.
